Liz Christy Community Garden

New York's first community garden, started in 1973 by a group of guerrilla gardeners who threw seed bombs over the fence of a vacant lot at Bowery and Houston before the city gave them permission. It's still run entirely by volunteers, and the turtles in the pond are minor celebrities.
